The Lagan Valley representative was speaking after the Secretary of State outlined the Government’s latest plans, adding that while welcome progress has been made, the Government will need to ensure the legacy system is properly resourced and commit to full and open engagement with the Northern Ireland Executive on its next steps.
She said: “When the previous Government ran roughshod over the needs of victims and survivors, it is welcome that this administration is trying to find a viable way forward for everyone impacted by the legacy of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, and one that is closer to some of the proposals in the Stormont House Agreement.
“For this to be a success, the UK Government must engage fully with the Executive around the impact of this bill on devolved areas, and just as importantly, ensure that the future legacy system is properly funded. This system has never been adequately resourced through the Block Grant and that has had a massive impact on numerous parts of our justice system.
“Truth and accountability for victims and survivors must always be at the heart of the legacy process. We will do them a great disservice if the early promise of these new legacy proposals is not matched with delivery for all.”
