UK Gov must reverse damaging welfare cuts and deliver fairer funding for public services, says Tennyson

The UK Government must reverse its damaging welfare cuts and deliver fairer funding for our public services, Alliance Finance spokesperson Eóin Tennyson MLA has said ahead of the upcoming Spending Review.

The Upper Bann MLA said next week’s announcement by Chancellor Rachel Reeves needs to include “major U-turns” on several issues.

“Since coming into Government last July, Labour has made a series of cruel and counterproductive moves, which have targeted the most vulnerable in our society," he said.

“That includes restricting eligibility on winter fuel payments, a punitive policy introduced in the absence of any consultation with the Executive, and continuing with the two-child benefit cap which has pushed thousands of children into poverty.

“Major U-turns are now needed on these issues. The Chancellor must depart from the austerity approach of her predecessors and begin to deliver the change Labour promised at the last election.

"The Spending Review must also guarantee fair funding for public services in Northern Ireland. Alliance played a key role in securing the £3.3 billion financial package which supported restoration of the Assembly last year. We now need to see the UK Government place our finances on a sustainable footing for the longer-term."
