Time to end dysfunctional politics and reform Stormont to deliver for the people of NI, says Bradshaw

Alliance TEO spokesperson Paula Bradshaw MLA has said, in light of highly troubling Covid Inquiry findings, that dysfunction is baked into the Stormont institutions and they must be reformed to prevent further instability in responding to any future global emergencies.

Political Reform Paula Bradshaw
It comes ahead of an Alliance motion due to be debated in the Assembly on Tuesday (9 Dec), calling on the Secretary of State to convene a process of institutional reform in consultation with the Irish Government and local parties, without any further delay.

Ms Bradshaw has said: “It was made abundantly clear in the findings of the Covid Inquiry that instability is baked into our political structures.

“The abuse of cross-community votes and constant party-politicking around issues of public health weakened our ability to adequately respond to Covid, and it’s shameful that ministers from the two largest parties consistently failed to put the common interest of all of the people of Northern Ireland above their party political interests.

“We simply cannot allow any one party to hold the functioning of government here to ransom ever again for any reason. As long as we remain without reform we will inevitably see these same patterns play out again, to the detriment of everyone right across NI.

“Stormont is only as stable today as it was the day before the last collapse. Institutional reform has been at the centre of our party’s politics for over two decades, and whilst we’re glad other parties have since started coming round to our position, we’re taking action to ensure the people of Northern Ireland receive the quality of governance they deserve.

“In light of the Inquiry’s findings, the case for reform cannot be more pertinent, and we must now see tangible commitment from the Secretary of State to starting the process of finally seeing it done.”
