The North Antrim MLA said: “The racist violence and intimidation that we have witnessed across Northern Ireland over the past year has been despicable and is hugely concerning. Now more than ever, we need to see strong political leadership that stands with the victims of these heinous attacks and unequivocally condemns any form of violence.
"Sadly, in recent months, I have seen several families and individuals in my constituency become victims of racist hate crimes. These incidents have led many to be displaced from their homes and forced children to leave school, all because of their skin colour and background.
“No grievance or ideology can ever justify terrorising a family in their own home. As a society, we must put an end to these dangerous narratives that continue to blame immigrants for the pressures facing our public sectors.
“The truth is that the inaccessibility of healthcare and the lack of housing are consequences of years of inaction by an unstable government that has prioritised party interests over the needs of the public.
“Our motion tomorrow is calling on every politician to recognise the power of their words and unite against the violence and racism that’s holding us back. However, simply condemning these issues is not enough.
“We urgently need a renewed Good Relations Strategy to improve integration within communities. In addition, we require further cross-departmental actions to eliminate barriers that prevent the construction of more homes to address our housing crisis, and lastly, we need the Communities Minister to outline the steps being taken by his department to protect people being targeted in their own homes.
“Delaying action always comes at a higher cost than taking it, and I hope politicians from across the board will join with me and my party in the Assembly to send a united message.”
