Those with broadest shoulders must bear most burden, says Eastwood, calling for tax on super-wealthy.

Alongside lobbying on it directly herself, Alliance Lagan Valley MP Sorcha Eastwood has joined a cross-party group of MPs in signing a letter calling on UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves to introduce a tax on extreme wealth.

Ahead of the Autumn Budget, the letter calls on the UK Government to aim higher in terms of introducing measures to positively uplift our local communities, particularly through the implementation of a tax on extreme wealth.

Ms Eastwood has said: “We’ve been warned that tough times lie ahead, however it’s our belief that those with the broadest shoulders should bear their fair share of the burden.

“As it stands, a significant number of people who are working are in receipt of Universal Credit, young people are being priced out of the housing market, we have full time workers having to avail of food banks, and our public services are crumbling. The system is broken, and as MPs we must be doing all we can to introduce interventions that positively impact our constituents’ everyday lives.

“Alliance wants to see a progressive taxation system in the UK that adequately reflects wealth, and guarantees the super-wealthy pay their fair share. Further than that, the phased implementation of carbon taxes on fossil fuel giants could raise even more money for public services, as well as progress the essential transition to net zero.

“Bold decisions are necessary to deliver the public funding that’s desperately needed to uplift our local communities, and there should be no more delay from the UK Government in undertaking them.”
