Sorcha Eastwood MP: Government must choose families over cover-ups on Hillsborough Law

Alliance Lagan Valley MP Sorcha Eastwood has called on the UK Government to urgently deliver the long-overdue Hillsborough Law, warning that anything less than the full legislation would be a betrayal of families who have fought for truth and justice.

The Hillsborough Law would place a legal duty on public officials to tell the truth during inquiries, and guarantee equal legal representation for bereaved families.

Speaking in a Westminster Hall debate on the issue, Ms Eastwood said: “Time and again, we see the same pattern: loss, betrayal, and then decades of families battling institutions for the truth.

“In my own constituency, the Conroy family have waited more than 30 years for answers about their Dad’s death in the RAF Chinook crash on the Mull of Kintyre. Instead of truth, they have faced what they believe to be a systematic cover-up, with crucial documents sealed for 100 years. To tell families they must wait until 2094 for justice is a profound injustice.”

She added: “The Labour Government promised in its manifesto to introduce a duty of candour law by April 2025. That deadline has come and gone, and instead of backing Ian Byrne MP’s Bill, which I was proud to co-sponsor, the Government chose to block it.

“Families are not asking for favours – they are asking for honesty, fairness and dignity. This Bill must be delivered in full: a duty of candour backed by real sanctions, and equality of arms at inquests and inquiries.

“Anything less is betrayal – and proof that this Labour Government has chosen to side with the system that shields itself, rather than with bereaved families who deserve truth and justice.”
