Roofe condemns deeply offensive display on County Tyrone bonfire and calls for immediate removal

Alliance Councillor Eddie Roofe has condemned the placing of a model mosque on top of a bonfire in Moygashel in County Tyrone, describing it as hateful and deeply offensive.

Cllr Roofe said: “The placing of this model on top of the bonfire is utterly abhorrent. Those responsible seek only to instil fear and spread hatred toward a specific group of people who call Northern Ireland their home, and it must be removed immediately.

“There is no place for this behaviour in our society. People should be free to live without fear of themselves or their families being targeted or subjected to discrimination.

“It is unacceptable that year after year, we continue to witness these hateful and deeply offensive displays. These actions cannot be justified as a celebration of culture when their true intention is to sow division and spread discrimination.

“Alliance supports everyone's right to celebrate their culture and traditions, but these celebrations must be conducted lawfully, safely and respectfully.

“I hope to see an end to these annual hate displays and urge everyone to speak out and condemn these actions.”
