He was speaking after the publication of the Electricity Consumption and Renewable Generation of Northern Ireland report published by the Department for the Economy today (5 September).
The Lagan Valley MLA has said: “Whilst it is to be welcomed that 46% of our electricity is generated by renewable sources, it’s alarming that the pace of change has practically stopped.
“If we are to meet our net zero targets and ensure that 80% of electricity comes from renewable sources by 2030, then action needs to be taken now.
“It is not acceptable that Northern Ireland loses out on investment simply because planning applications get stuck in years of delay through our planning process. The current planning process is not fit for purpose, and the need for planning reforms is urgent.
“Energy is central to all of our lives. We live at an exciting time of opportunity, of transition and of change. At this time, we must position ourselves to take full advantage and deliver the benefits directly to every household.
“Alliance will continue working towards the ambition of making Northern Ireland a world leader in energy efficiency and green technologies, and in achieving our net zero targets.”
