Minority of bad faith actors determined to ensure sectarian division remains, says McAllister

A minority of bad faith actors are determined to ensure sectarian division remains in North Belfast, Alliance MLA Nuala McAllister has said.

The North Belfast MLA was speaking in the wake of a series of sectarian-motivated attacks in Annalee Street and Alloa Street area over the past week.

“Northern Ireland is almost 30 years on from the Good Friday Agreement, yet a minority of bad faith actors are determined to ensure sectarian division lives on,” said Ms McAllister.

“It is completely unacceptable some residents have been left feeling they have no option but flee their homes due to safety concerns. These attacks have no place in our society. These are families, many of whom have young children, or elderly people with health conditions and they no longer feel safe living in a home they love.

“I want to thank those residents who attended the multi-agency meeting on Tuesday or who have contacted me individually for speaking out and sharing their experiences. The response to these attacks has proven the overwhelming majority of people in North Belfast are committed to creating a vibrant, welcoming community for all.

“I am continuing to work with the PSNI, local agencies and individual residents to ensure those living on Annalee Street and Alloa Street can feel safe and secure in their homes. I would encourage anyone with information that may be relevant to get in touch with the PSNI or reach out confidentially to Crimestoppers."
