From 2nd November 2026, the Northern Ireland Bowel Cancer Screening Programme will begin extending invitations to people aged 59, with 58-year-olds joining the programme from April 2027.
The North Belfast MLA said: “Lowering the screening age is to be warmly welcomed and will undoubtedly improve outcomes and save lives across Northern Ireland. The phased reduction in age limit should now be completed as quickly as possible, and we also need to go further in ensuring access to genetic testing for wider family circles as part of a comprehensive preventative approach to this cruel condition.
“Alliance has long campaigned for reform of bowel cancer screening and today’s news has not come before time. We will continue holding the minister to account in implementing the new testing regime and ensuring those who receive a bowel cancer diagnosis receive the holistic care that they need.”
