The British Medical Association announced GPs backed the action overwhelmingly, adding it reflected the mood of the profession. It follows the Minister’s imposing of a funding settlement with GPs, despite them voting against it.
“It is not a surprise to hear GPs have overwhelmingly backed the need for collective action, as they have asked for more GPs in practices in order to see more patients,” said North Belfast MLA Ms McAllister.
“The Health Minister’s imposing of a new contract despite GPs voting against it has led to this situation, exacerbating the pressures facing GPs. It is clear the Minister’s gamble has not paid off – GPs cannot give what they don’t have. The current situation is not sustainable and does not deliver for the public.
“The Health Minister needs to urgently get round the table with GPs and resolve this ongoing crisis, to help give GP practices the ability to see more patients. Otherwise, those who will suffer the most are the people of Northern Ireland.”
