Health Minister Mike Nesbitt announced the move, which will now be subject to a public consultation. The aim is for hospitals to fit into a larger network, with reconfiguration of some services.
“Alliance welcomes today’s announcement of this blueprint, given there have been many months of delay to this point,” said Ms McAllister.
“A single hospital network has the potential to set the standard for a new, more efficient approach to health and social care in Northern Ireland, one which will benefit all of us. However, the time for talking is now over and action is needed.
“The blueprint is described as a framework for future decision-making, but we do not need more reviews and frameworks for that. We need decisions now.”
“There is some concern around the lack of detail on how this will work in practice,” added Mr Donnelly.
“That includes the role of these hospitals within a wider network, as well as workforce considerations and options for rural transport. Alliance will raise all of these and more in our consultation response.
“Ultimately, if reconfiguration and reform of the health service is to succeed, strong political leadership – from all parties – is needed. It will not be good enough to say one thing but have your actions do the opposite.
“Alliance has a clear track record of making necessary decisions around health reform, and we look forward to seeing other parties following our lead.”
