Major change in direction needed to tackle skill shortages in Northern Ireland, says Alliance representatives

Ms Nicholl, who is chair of the APG on Skills, said: “This report serves as a crucial wake-up call to the Economy Minister, highlighting that her Department's significant spend on skills development is not as strategically focused as it should be.

“There is significant frustration that so much time has been wasted talking about how we as a society can enhance productivity, but not taking the long-term action that is required. This has ultimately left Northern Ireland lagging unnecessarily behind for years, despite the notable success of some sectors.

“The Minister needs to take this report seriously and deliver the skills system we need to succeed.”

Mr Honeyford added: “As a member of the PAC Committee, Skills has been an essential issue that we have worked through to try and bring recommendations that will deliver better opportunities for everyone and unlock growth in our economy.

“It’s vital that the next generation, and people of all ages, have the best opportunities to train but also that the skills opportunities are closely aligned with the needs of employers and the broader economy.

“A major change in direction is necessary, requiring improved collaboration among departments, particularly between the Department of Education and the Department for Economy, as well as with industry. It’s also crucial to improve coordination between schools and colleges to provide the best opportunities for our students.

“Only with these changes will we see the successful implementation of the Skills Strategy and enhance economic growth.”
