Launch of strategy to tackle gender-based violence welcome, but it must be backed with action, says Egan.

Deputy Chair of the Executive Office Committee, Connie Egan MLA, has welcomed today (16 September)’s launch of the Ending Violence against Women and Girls Strategic Framework and Action Plan. However, she also cautioned that this now must be followed with action, commitment and resources.

The North Down MLA has said: "I am delighted to finally welcome the long-awaited approval of the Strategic Framework to End Violence against Women and Girls, and the action plan from the Executive.

“To see this work set as a key priority within the Programme for Government, in coordination with the also newly approved Domestic and Sexual Abuse Strategy, sends a clear message. For far too long, Northern Ireland has been the only place across these islands without a dedicated action plan to tackle the unacceptable levels of misogyny and abuse we see right across our society, and now is the time for change.

“The approval of the Strategic Framework has been both years in the making, and years too late. So many have lost lives due to government inaction, and now is the time to do better. Whilst Stormont was pulled down, civic society and grassroots campaigners have been leading the way and delivering essential, frontline support. Now that work must continue, and be adequately funded to do so.

“I, and my Alliance Party colleagues, have been determined and consistent in our call for urgent action. Whether delivering specialist frontline services, or embedding preventative learning into our education system, every Department has a role to play in making this happen.

“This is a real opportunity for change, so let's not waste another second. I look forward to engaging on this in the coming weeks, and holding those involved accountable to the promises they have made."
