Mr Donnelly, who is Deputy Chair of the Health Committee, has said: “With over 400,000 waiting for a first outpatient appointment and over 170,000 waiting for a diagnostic test, far too many people here are living the reality of the dire state of our waiting lists every day.
“With that in mind, the announcement of this plan from the Health Minister is to be welcomed. However, actions speak louder than words and we must now see tangible action undertaken to deliver real change to the experience of those waiting for care.
“It’s concerning to note, though, that at no point in the course of the announcement was any reference made to some of the most vulnerable in our society who continue to languish on mental health waiting lists in particular, nor was any plan set out for addressing their unique struggle.
“New data states that more than 5,200 adults, as well as at least 500 children, across Northern Ireland are waiting for their first mental health appointment. We’re experiencing a mental health crisis in NI and we cannot let these people be left behind, and I will continue making the case to ensure they’re able to access the services they so desperately need.
“Behind all of these figures are real people – our family members, our friends, and our neighbours, waiting for often life-saving treatment. Ultimately, the proof will be in the pudding and we hope these interventions can now start the process of bringing down waiting lists with urgency.”
