The Bangor East and Donaghadee Councillor was speaking after officially being selected as the Borough’s Deputy Mayor for the new term. It follows Alliance’s successful election there, which saw the party increase its seats by two on the Council.

“It is an absolute honour to be selected as Deputy Mayor for the Borough for the forthcoming year,” said Councillor Irwin.

“It follows the fantastic election for Alliance in Ards and North Down and I want to thank every person who came out to vote for the party. I also want to pay tribute to Councillor Karen Douglas, who has just completed a successful year as Mayor of Ards and North Down. I look forward to continuing her hard work representing everyone in our local area.

“As a young LGBTQ+ woman in politics, I do not take the honour of being Deputy Mayor lightly and want to use the role to showcase the progressive and vibrant nature of our Borough. I will help in any way I can to do that, championing openness and transparency, while working towards making Ards and North Down the inclusive area we all know it is.”
