His fellow Health Committee colleague and Alliance MLA Nuala McAllister proposed a full statutory public inquiry during yesterday's (13 November 2025) Health Committee session in Stormont.
“The Committee is united in its view. Notwithstanding the final report still to come, the evidence already in the public domain makes a full statutory public inquiry essential. These women deserve answers, and they deserve accountability.”
“Committee members agreed that significant concerns remain, and this week’s session highlighted again that officials could not provide clear or consistent explanations about how this was allowed to continue for so many years.
“We have been unable to get answers to basic questions. The only credible route is a public inquiry with the powers to compel witnesses.
Mr Donnelly also recognised the contribution of his party colleague Michelle Guy MLA, who was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2023. Michelle has been instrumental in supporting the Ladies with Letters group and ensuring the experiences of affected women remain firmly at the forefront.
“My colleague Michelle Guy has worked closely with the Ladies with Letters, whose dedication to truth and justice has been unwavering. Together they have been calling for a full statutory public inquiry for some time,” he said.
“The people affected placed trust in the screening system, and that trust was not upheld. A full statutory public inquiry is essential to understand what happened and ensure it can never happen again.”
