The North Down MLA said: “Sexual offence cases are among the most distressing, and navigating the justice system can be particularly challenging for all victims, especially child victims. It is welcome news that Alliance Justice Minister, Naomi Long, is launching the new CSOLA service, following the success of the adult scheme SOLA, to provide support and free legal advice to child victims.

“This new scheme introduced by the Department of Justice will be delivered by Victim Support NI and will help to support victims aged 17 and under to navigate the justice system by providing free, independent legal advice until the start of a trial.

“It is unimaginable to think of having to endure the complexities of the justice system with little support after being victim to such a traumatic crime, and it’s even more inconceivable to think of it from a child’s perspective.

“I hope that with the introduction of the CSOLA scheme, more children and families feel comfortable to report these severe crimes, knowing they now have access to the help and support they need.

“The success of the adult SOLA scheme reinforced the need for similar support for children and I want to thank the Justice Minister for her work in launching these vital schemes, ensuring victims receive the necessary support through one of the most traumatic experiences of their lives, and her continued commitment to creating a justice system that prioritises victims.”
