Egan welcomes campaign launch raising awareness of attacks on police officers in the line of duty

Yesterday (19 June), Alliance Justice spokesperson Connie Egan MLA attended the launch of the Police Federation of Northern Ireland's campaign 'Let them protect.' This campaign aims to shed light on the high number of attacks police officers face daily when in the line of duty and how it impacts communities.

Speaking after the event, the North Down MLA said: "Any violence against someone providing a public service is simply unacceptable. The Police Federation's campaign, 'Let them protect', is a much-needed wake-up call for those engaging in disorder, particularly in light of the recent riots throughout Northern Ireland, which have left over 60 officers injured.

“These statistics are shocking. Police officers should be able to perform their duties without the fear of being attacked and injured. It is unacceptable for them to end up in hospital for doing their jobs.

"It was great to have Justice Minister Naomi Long at this event, supporting the Police Federation's call and making clear that every injury means one less officer keeping our communities safe.

"Alliance is committed to supporting the police, and we welcome the Justice Minister's commitment in her upcoming sentencing bill that proposes harsher penalties for anyone who attacks someone providing a public service in Northern Ireland.”
