Eastwood tables amendment to protect NI Health and Voluntary sectors from employer National Insurance hike.

Alliance Lagan Valley MP Sorcha Eastwood is leading efforts to safeguard Northern Ireland’s healthcare, hospice, and voluntary sectors from the proposed rise in employer National Insurance rates.

As the only Northern Ireland MP to table an amendment to the National Insurance (Secondary Class 1 Contributions) Bill, she’s seeking to exempt care homes, domiciliary care providers, GP and dental surgeries, pharmacists, health and social care charities, and community organisations from the Labour Government’s increase announced in the Autumn Budget.

The Bill will proceed through all remaining stages on Tuesday (17 Dec).

Ms Eastwood has said: “These sectors are already under immense pressure, operating on slim margins while delivering vital services. This amendment is about protecting their ability to serve our communities and ensuring fairness for Northern Ireland.

“In Lagan Valley particularly, these vital services are at the heart of our community, from the dedicated care provided by local hospices to the life-changing work of voluntary organisations. They’re already facing considerable financial strain, and it’s unacceptable that they stand to shoulder even more.

"What really matters to people are the services we rely on every day - care for our loved ones, support in times of need, and the organisations that make a difference in our society. I’m proud to stand up for them, and with this amendment I’m committed to putting people first, and ensuring the Labour Government fully recognises the unique challenges we face here in Northern Ireland.”
