Donnelly calls for stronger action on flu as hospital admissions double and winter pressures mount

Alliance Health spokesperson Danny Donnelly MLA has warned that the health service faces mounting strain this winter, as new figures reveal a doubling in community acquired emergency hospital admissions linked to flu.

The East Antrim MLA said the figures underline the urgent need for the Department of Health to strengthen efforts to increase vaccination uptake and to set out a clear, evidence-based plan to manage winter pressures across the health and social care system.

“We have been calling for months for a Winter Preparedness Plan that is fit for purpose, and this is exactly why,” said Mr Donnelly.

“We’re already moving into a period of significant winter pressure, and the health service simply cannot afford to face another surge without robust planning and early intervention.

“I have asked the Minister several questions about what plans are in place to manage the risk of rising flu levels on top of existing winter pressures, and whether the Department has carried out any epidemiological modelling to prepare our health service. These are essential to ensuring pressures are eased and lives are saved.

"Without strong early action, rising flu levels could easily tip an already stretched system into crisis. The Minister must urgently manage this. Prevention and preparation are far better than another winter of firefighting.

“Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect people, yet this year we’ve seen little visibility of any public campaign to encourage uptake. If the Department expects the public to take this seriously, it must lead by example through clear communication, collaboration with primary care, and practical support for those delivering the vaccine.

"I strongly urge healthcare workers and the public to get vaccinated and protect themselves and others this winter."
