Current vacancies in NI health service concerning, says Donnelly, stating Safe and Effective Staffing legislation must be delivered

Alliance Health spokesperson, and deputy Chair of the Health Committee, Danny Donnelly MLA has expressed concern at the gaps in filling vacancies for nursing and midwifery staff in Northern Ireland, stating the Safe and Effective Staffing legislation must be delivered without delay.

The East Antrim MLA was speaking following the publication of the latest recruitment and workforce statistics today (19 February) from the Department of Health. These have revealed that as of 31 December 2024, 22 percent of current Health and Social Care vacancies are in nursing and midwifery, with 21 percent specifically within nursing.

Mr Donnelly said: “These statistics are very concerning, especially given the specific challenges we faced in our hospitals over the winter period.

“All aspects of our health service are under huge strain, and these problems are greatly exacerbated by the significant number of vacancies within our nursing and midwifery staff.

“Our health and social care staff play an invaluable role, and we must ensure they are given the highest possible support within what are very challenging working conditions.

“The Department of Health must do what it can to support nurses and midwives, and I will be seeking to question the Minister on the progress of work to ensure this.

“This is the latest evidence showing why the proposed Safe and Effective Staffing legislation by the DOH must be delivered without delay, as well as wider measures to ensure better working conditions for our nurses and midwives. We must also consider why many are looking to leave the health service, and what we can do to support people looking to join.”
