Conversion Practices Bill a historic opportunity for progress, says Tennyson, ahead of debate

The Northern Ireland Assembly has a historic opportunity to ban cruel and archaic conversion practices, Alliance Deputy Leader Eóin Tennyson MLA has said.

Eóin Tennyson

He was speaking ahead of the Second Stage debate on the Conversion Practices Bill (15 September).

Speaking ahead of the debate, Mr Tennyson said: "So-called conversion practices are cruel and archaic, and have no place in our society.

"These discredited, dehumanising and harmful acts have been condemned by the World Health Organization, the UN Committee Against Torture and the British Psychological Society.

"No one should face coercion, abuse or harm because of who they are or who they love. This is balanced legislation which protects LGBT+ people from harm whilst also upholding freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

"For too long, Northern Ireland has lagged behind on equality. This legislation represents a historic opportunity, not only to prohibit these outdated practices, but also to lead change across these islands and send a clear message that LGBT+ people are entitled to the same dignity, respect and rights as everyone else.

"I hope Assembly members from all parties will support this bill at Second Stage and allow this important conversation to move forward."
