Communities thrive when we work together to deliver for everyone, says Long, bringing forward motion

Alliance Lisnasharragh Councillor Michael Long has said that whilst we all have a duty to contribute positively to our local communities, those with the most in terms of means have a particularly crucial role to play, bringing forward a motion to Belfast City Council.

The motion, agreed at today’s (21 March) meeting of Strategic Policy and Resources Committee, calls on council to take a lead role in developing a sponsorship and philanthropy network, looking at how we can we can strengthen the corporate responsibility commitments of organisations and institutions to support local initiatives within the city.

Cllr Long has said: “Communities thrive when we all work together to deliver the best possible outcomes for everyone within them.

“We want to see council, using its own research and insight, taking the lead in developing an effective philanthropic network within the city, making clear to those local organisations and individuals with the means to contribute to crucial redevelopment efforts, which projects are most in need at any given time.

“This would involve working with government departments to draw up a list of potential projects, from public realm works, to unresolved infrastructure issues, to IT projects, for example, which these companies and individuals can then support, whether that be financially, or by providing volunteer support or even professional expertise.

“We have an extensive and incredibly inspiring philanthropic history here and Alliance remains committed to building vibrant, prosperous communities where everyone is supported and has the opportunity to flourish. We're glad others could also get behind this motion, and the shared desire to create a better Belfast for all.”
