The Civic Forum was originally established in 2000 as part of the Good Friday Agreement (GFA) Act, but was disbanded in 2002 following the collapse of the Executive. The Forum was intended to serve as a consultative mechanism for addressing social, economic, and cultural issues.
The East Antrim MLA said: “Alliance has called for the reconstitution of the Civic Forum for years following its disbandment, and whilst this announcement from the First and deputy First Ministers is progress, this is something that should have happened long ago.
“The Forum is a requirement of the GFA and can be a vital tool to engage the wider civic society to help improve and shape policy development in Northern Ireland. The engagement of those in wider society, with a diverse range of expertise, gives the public more say in governance and offers a process for enriching democracy.
“Nevertheless, if the First Ministers are serious about delivering the Civic Forum, many questions remain regarding the feasibility of its establishment by the end of this mandate, as time is running short.
“Alliance hope to see the Civic Forum operational again as soon as possible, and my colleagues and I will continue to ask the Executive Office for updates on its progress. However, over recent events, we have observed that the department has shown little capacity to do anything at pace, so we remain to be convinced and will be keeping a close eye to ensure it happens.”
