Cervical screening resignations show need for a statutory public inquiry, say Alliance representatives.

Alliance MLAs Michelle Guy and Nuala McAllister have called for a full statutory public inquiry into the cervical screening scandal in the Southern Trust, urging the Health Minister to act without further delay.

It comes following the resignation of two senior medics involved in Northern Ireland's cervical screening programme, citing their concerns about the service.

Alliance Health spokesperson, Nuala McAllister MLA said: “These resignations only prompt more questions as to the efficacy of the cervical screening process and how it has been allowed to reach such a dangerous point. That two senior medics have chosen to resign after being made to feel their concerns were being ignored is cause for extreme worry and raises even more red flags about the running of the service.

“I will be raising this issue at Health Committee, however in the meantime, I would implore the Health Minister to take urgent action amidst this chaos and uncertainty and call a statutory public inquiry.

“If we are to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past, we must heed the warnings of health professionals now and make sure their concerns are fully investigated. Women’s health is far too important for faith to be lost in such a crucial service.”

Lagan Valley MLA, Michelle Guy added: “Just last week it was once again made abundantly clear the impact of an unsafe cervical screening service in the Southern Trust, with eight women developing cancer after having smear tests misread and two women tragically losing their lives.

“Having met with the Ladies with Letters, I have witnessed first-hand the effect that this scandal has had on those who were made victims of it. That two senior medics have resigned over concerns that such a scandal could be repeated is further proof of the need for urgent action to be taken to ensure women are able to place their trust in what can be a lifesaving service.”
