Speaking as he extended the deadline for his consultation period for an extra week, the South Antrim MLA said his proposed Bill was the best opportunity to bring Northern Ireland into line with the rest of the UK in banning the practice.
“As we approach 2025, it is quite unbelievable it is not illegal in Northern Ireland to hunt wild mammals with dogs,” said Mr Blair.
“That is despite Alliance’s previous attempt to do so, when the Bill fell due to votes from Sinn Féin and most DUP MLAs, who combined to vote against it. Therefore, this is likely the last chance for people to do their bit to outlaw this horrible, outdated practice.
“Over the Christmas period, we were once again reminded of how disgusting it is to see animals being ripped apart as a fixture on the calendar. It is therefore crucial we do not let this final opportunity slip and give a voice to the majority of people who remain opposed these hunts here.
“I urge everyone to take the short time needed to participate in the consultation and help end this brutal activity, which has no place in modern society.”
