Alliance MLAs call for Education Authority review of minor works process

Alliance Education spokespeople Nick Mathison MLA and Michelle Guy MLA have urged the Education Authority (EA) to review its process for minor works in schools.

Their call follows a briefing from EA officials at the Education Committee this week, during which concerns were raised about the prioritisation and transparency of minor works projects.

Chair of the Education Committee, Mr Mathison said: “During committee I questioned officials on how minor works projects are prioritised within the EA and discovered that the process for ensuring the most significant and urgent projects are addressed first is far from clear.

“EA officials appeared to be content with the prioritisation system for minor works. However, due to the significant public concern and controversy surrounding major funding allocations, highlighted by the Lisneal project, a review of this process is clearly necessary.

“I have called on the EA and the Minister to review the minor works process to ensure that the most urgent health and safety risks in schools are addressed as a top priority in a transparent and clear format. We are currently facing a difficult situation in terms of our public finances and tough decisions must be made where funding is prioritised.”

Ms Guy added: "During the meeting I asked officials to clarify the health and safety risk associated with Lisneal’s pitch and confirm what temporary repairs had been carried out to keep it playable. Organisations such as the EA should have a culture of openness and transparency in relation to their stewardship of public money and I was concerned that officials downplayed the importance of accurate external information related to funding thresholds.

“It’s dismissive to try and minimise the importance of clarity around funding allocation as much of the controversy and mistrust around the decision making in this case stems directly from the communication of inaccurate information.

“The EA and the Minister must learn from the Lisneal situation and ensure that future minor works decisions are based on a transparent and accountable process. I am calling on the EA to review its procedures and establish clear guidelines on how projects are prioritised and progressed."
