All party support for McAllister motion on Integrated Education

Alliance Councillor Nuala McAllister has said she is pleased Belfast City Council has agreed her motion congratulating the Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education (NICIE) and the Integrated Education Fund (IEF) on their nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Councillor McAllister said: “It is tremendous news that NICIE and the IEF have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. This nomination is a recognition of the important work both organisations carry out to bring children together and help us to build a united community.

In North Belfast we see the benefits of integrated education- the fantastic work that Hazelwood Integrated Primary School do to ensure diversity and respect are central to the school ethos. Additionally, the parents who want their children to be placed in a primary integrated school are far greater than the numbers available in North Belfast, showing that there is a public will to educate children together.

“Unfortunately there are still too many barriers in Northern Ireland dividing our community, but the growth of the Integrated Education sector has been a very positive factor in many areas, including my area of North Belfast. Being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize will raise the profile of Integrated Education and encourage more parents to consider it for their children.

“I am pleased my motion to Council congratulating NICIE and the IEF was supported by all parties and look forward to the results being announced soon.”
