It has never been more important to remember those who paid the ultimate price, says Long on 80th anniversary of VE Day

It has never been more important to remember the sacrifice of those who paid the ultimate price while freeing Europe from fascism and tyranny, Alliance Leader Naomi Long MLA has said, as the 80th anniversary of VE Day is commemorated.

May 8, 1945 saw the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allied Forces, marking the end of World War II in Europe. Mrs Long said it was vital we never forget the actions of those who fought against the Nazis, as well as remembering the actions that led to the war itself.

“Each of us owe an immense debt of gratitude to all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in freeing Europe,” she said.

“Their actions against one of the greatest evils the world has ever seen is almost indescribably brave. Yet most went off to fight or played their role at home without thinking twice. Many never returned and of those who did, scores had physical or psychological scars, which they bore for the rest of their lives.

“It has never been more important to remember what they were fighting against. As we see the rise of the far right in many places across Europe and the rest of the world, we are reminded what bigotry, tyranny and evil can lead to.

“The most fitting tribute each of us can do is play our part in facing down the evils of fascism, create strong relationships with our neighbours, and ensure the hard-won peace is not lost.”
