Independent Reporting Commission report reinforces need to end paramilitarism without caveats, says Bradshaw

Alliance Executive Office Spokesperson, Paula Bradshaw MLA, has said the report of the Independent Reporting Commission linking paramilitarism to anti-immigration unrest is unsurprising, and reinforces the need to end paramilitarism as part of the move towards ending racism and promoting reconciliation.

The South Belfast MLA stated: "The link between paramilitarism and xenophobic violence was always evident, was stated clearly by the police, and has now been further clarified by the Independent Reporting Commission. The denial we have seen by some is no longer an option.

"Ultimately, the First and deputy First Minister have responsibility both for ending paramilitarism and for tackling racism, and we see again clearly now that these are two sides of the same coin. The Commission refers to the 'live and serious' threat posed by paramilitary groups, not least to the communities within which they operate. The intimidation and coercive control they continue to pursue can no longer be tolerated.

"What we must now see is a full set of proposals from the First and deputy First Minister, including relevant regulations, designed to promote reconciliation, deliver racial equality and condemn paramilitarism to the past."
