He was speaking after the International Monetary Fund predicted that the energy crisis will hit the UK harder than any of the world’s advanced economies, with the impact of energy price spikes expected to continue into next year.
“Not satisfied with costing the public purse tens of billions of pounds through the hard Brexit they championed, the DUP have now gone a step further and acted as cheerleaders for an illegal Middle East war that has sent fuel prices soaring and left local families struggling to get by”, Mr Tennyson said.
“Northern Ireland was already facing a range of challenges, and the impact of the Iranian conflict has made the outlook even more difficult. The DUP owe an apology to every family and business now struggling to keep the lights on while they align themselves with one of the most chaotic and destructive American administrations in history.
“The scale of the current crisis demands a serious package of measures to support families and business owners. In the immediate term, that starts with cutting fuel duty and enhancing support for households reliant on home heating oil. But it also means redoubling our efforts to develop closer European ties through a UK-EU Customs Union, and accelerating a just transition to clean, green, renewable energy.
“Those steps are the only way to begin reversing the damage, bring prices down and give businesses the stability and confidence they need to sustain well-paid jobs for local workers.”
