Proposing of Emergency Motion on Integrated Education

Speech by Michael Long delivered to 2006 Party Conference on Sat 4th Mar 2006

Conference notes that, for the second year in a row, as Party Conference meets, the Government is refusing to fund expansion of integrated education in Northern Ireland.

Conference condemns the latest decision by Government to refuse funding to four integrated schools, against the will of parents.

Conference recognises that integrated schools illustrate how a diverse pupil, in terms of religion, social class and ability, can be educated to a high standard in a single school.

Conference calls upon Government - which pays lip service to a shared future, efficient use of resources and parental choice - to live up to its rhetoric and its responsibilities, and ensure that another generation of young people are not denied the right to be educated together.
