Alliance Party Economy Spokesperson Ian James Parsley has demanded the Executive meet to discuss opportunities arising from the UK Government's £250 billion banking bail-out.

Cllr Parsley stated: "The part-nationalisation of London 's banking sector means a fundamental shift of UK regional economic policy will surely follow. The UK Government's absolute reliance on the City of London will have to end, and that could be to Northern Ireland 's advantage.

"The Northern Ireland Executive should therefore be at the centre of the debate about how the UK economy can be re-structured so that other regions, particularly those with their own law-making powers, can play a fuller role in business policy and create their fair share of wealth. Yet again, however, we find the Executive has gone missing in action.

"For an Executive which claims to have the economy as its 'Number One Priority', this is a golden opportunity to ensure a shift in economic activity away from London and the South East of England, and thus close the wealth creation gap. Yet all we get are attempts to shirk responsibility for delivering real influence on this issue on behalf of the people of Northern Ireland - we see no new comments, no new policies, not even a meeting.

" Northern Ireland is missing out on having a voice on the crucial issue of this decade. If the Executive cannot take part in such vital issues of the day, it should hand over to those willing to do the job."
