Alliance Health Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has given a guarded welcome to plans that will see doctors' competence tested every five years, but said the tests must not be time-consuming and must not take them away from the vital work they do.

Kieran McCarthy MLA stated: "I would welcome this scheme as long as it does not take up doctors' time that would normally be devoted to treating patients. It also appears that this initiative will mean high healthcare standards can be maintained through regular checks - this is essential.

"I do not want to see our doctors bogged down in bureaucracy, so if this scheme can be implemented with no reduction in each doctor's time with patients, I would support it."
