Alliance Deputy Leader Naomi Long MLA has blasted Iris Robinson's comments on gay people and said she should retract them immediately. Mrs Robinson made the comments at Westminster in a debate on the management of sex offenders.

Naomi Long MLA said: "Iris Robinson's comments show a complete lack of responsibility. Such remarks are both inflammatory and extremely dangerous.

"She needs to consider the repercussions of such remarks, particularly on those in society who are vulnerable to prejudice and to physical attack.

"How anyone can equate what happens in private between two consenting adults with an adult abusing a child and robbing it of its innocence is utterly beyond me.

"Her repeated attacks on gay people in recent weeks are harmful and dangerous and show none of the love or compassion which she claims to feel for individuals. I would appeal to her to stop."
