Antrim Alliance Councillor Alan Lawther has called the RAF job losses at Aldergrove devastating, and said they were a big part in the local community and will be much missed.

Cllr Alan Lawther said: "I am very sad top see these RAF jobs leaving Aldergrove. These staff have been integral in the normalization process within our society.

"They established good community links, worked closely with local sporting groups and organized educational trips for schools. My daughter took part in a trip there a few weeks ago and she really enjoyed learning about planes. The RAF integrated very well into the community and this news is very sad.

"I am deeply worried about local people losing their jobs and I fear that this issue could be devastating for the area.

"I will be working hard to secure a rail link to the International Airport, and will be trying to maximize the potential of the new business park at the airport and the Enkalon site. Plans must be put in place to ensure new jobs are created in the area."
