Strangford Alliance MLA Kieran McCarthy has stated he has a number of real concerns about the planned privatization of Portaferry's Exploris aquarium. He stated that people need to know whether the move would put jobs and facilities in jeopardy at the local tourist attraction. The issue was discussed last night at an Ards Borough Council meeting.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: "I have real reservations about the privatization of the Exploris aquarium.

"We have seen the debacle regarding plans to place the Giant's Causeway visitors' centre in private hands. Everyone knows about the can of worms that opened up. Ards Council must think carefully about the consequences of selling the family silver.

"I would be very concerned that people's jobs might be put at risk. We need assurances that this would not be the case.

"The Exploris aquarium has been a vital part of the local tourism industry for well over a decade. Facilities like the caravan park, the play area, the putting green and the bowling green might be placed in jeopardy if the aquarium is privatized. Local people need answers regarding these important concerns."
