The Alliance Party's North Belfast spokesperson, Gerry Lynch , has objected to a massive planning application at Fortwilliam Grange.

"The developer has applied for permission to build 122 flats and 6 houses on a tiny site. This not only threatens the character of Fortwilliam Park , one of Belfast 's best-preserved tree-lined avenues, but will lead to traffic problems and reduce green space and privacy for people living in Fortwilliam Grange and parts of Mount Vernon .

"Building over green space near one of Belfast 's most deprived areas is simply outrageous.

"Worse yet, the developer has already destroyed a beautiful stand of mature trees on Fortwilliam Park before even putting the planning application in. These cannot be replaced no matter what happens to the application.

"This massive development will also lead to traffic chaos at what is already a difficult junction to negotiate.

"It seems that while over 1,500 people in housing stress wait for a decent home in North Belfast , private developers are still being permitted to make a quick buck by destroying environmentally important areas.

"I have written to the Planning Service objecting to this application in the strongest terms. I hope as many local residents as possible will join me to ensure this outrageous proposal is thrown out."
