McCarthy pushes Health Minister for action on World Mental Health day1.13.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 10th Oct 2007
On World Mental Health Day, Alliance Health Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA called on the Health Minster to do more to improve mental services stating that more progress must be made in implementing the findings of the Bamford Review. He also welcomed the awareness raising campaign launched today by the Health Promotion Agency in relation to mental health. Strangford MLA Kieran McCarthy said: "I am calling on the Health Minister Michael McGimpsey to make quicker progress in implementing the findings of the Bamford Review. "Implementing these findings will give local people the mental health services they deserve and will also make the work of our dedicated mental healthcare staff easier. "I was interested to hear the Health Promotion Agency say that one in five people shows signs of possible mental illness. This illustrates the widespread nature of this issue and the urgent need for Bamford to be implemented by the Health Minister. "I strongly support the Health Promotion Agency's campaign launched today to raise awareness and I call on the Minister to follow their lead." ENDS
