Alliance Health Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has hailed news that cancer survival rates are improving and praised the work of local healthcare staff in delivering this positive news. He did however add that there must be no complacency, and every effort must be made to continue this positive trend. A study published today by the Northern Ireland Cancer Registry showed that male mortality dropped by 1.8% and female mortality by 0.8%, between 1993 and 2004.

Strangford MLA Kieran McCarthy said: "Local healthcare staff should be praised for these improved statistics. I would however say that there must be no complacency, and the Health Minister must strive to continue this improvement.

"The important study released today will hopefully provide a strong foundation for good practice for the future.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to praise the work of another organisation, the Health Promotion Agency, and I would like to see them continue to be supported in their excellent work.

"They have been at the forefront of the anti-smoking campaign and their continuing efforts are absolutely invaluable."
