Alliance backs campaign to create GCSE qualification in Lithuanian10.21.00am GMT Tue 2nd Oct 2007
Alliance Party Education Spokesperson Trevor Lunn MLA has called on the local exam board CCEA to create a GCSE qualification in Lithuanian. The Lagan Valley MLA said: "I support the campaign to get a GCSE in Lithuanian created and I would encourage the Council for Curriculum Examinations and Assessment to act accordingly. "The choice of languages at GCSE level currently on offer is quite extensive, with Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Polish qualifications available. "Creating a GCSE in Lithuanian will give local people the chance to reach out to more of our European Union cousins. It will also give people a good insight into Lithuanian culture and will hopefully encourage more interaction with migrants from there. "Migrants play a vital role in our society both culturally and economically and it would be very positive to give people a chance to learn more about their neighbours." ENDS
