McCarthy says Health Minister must act on Bamford mental health report10.35.35am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 16th Aug 2007
Alliance Health Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has welcomed the latest report from the Bamford Review and called on the Health Minister to give assurances that he will overhaul mental health laws as recommended by the report. Today's report is the last in a series of ten published by the Bamford Review. Opposition MLA, Mr McCarthy said: "The Health Minister must give us assurances that he will implement the findings of the Bamford Review and overhaul legislation. Local people deserve the best mental health services possible and implementing Bamford will deliver that. "Devolution is about making a real difference to the lives of local people. Improving mental health services will do this. The Executive must not ignore these local needs. "I would like to take this opportunity to praise the work of the Bamford Review team. Their research has shone a light on mental health services and has shown what is needed to give local people the service they need and deserve. "I also wish to pay tribute to our local mental health staff who do a fantastic job often under difficult circumstances. The implementation of the Bamford findings would also benefit them by giving them more assistance in their work." ENDS
