Alliance Party Road Safety Spokesperson Ian James Parsley has demanded the administrative burden be taken off local road safety committees.

The North Down Councillor stated: "No matter what happens with the Review of Public Administration, the strength of local Road Safety Committees lies in the very fact they are local. They must be able to continue the job regardless of the new council arrangements.

"Currently the burden of administration is limiting Committees' capacity to do the job they are formed to do. Particularly in smaller areas like Holywood, there is much more that could be done directly by the Department or the Road Safety Council if resources were allocated

properly.

"Volunteers on Road Safety Committees are there to improve road safety and raise road safety issues. However, they require much more assistance in raising awareness with the public locally through events and advertising.

"Work with Road Safety Committees has been among the highlights of my two years on Council so far, but those giving up their time to highlight road safety issues deserve to know their work will bring results."
