South Belfast Alliance MLA Anna Lo has backed a rally held to ensure more women play a role in local politics. The rally, taking place at Stormont, has been organised by the Women into Politics group.

Anna Lo MLA said: "Women are massively under represented in local politics.

"I welcome the work of Women into Politics and hope that their campaign is successful. More encouragement must be provided to ensure that more women enter political life in Northern Ireland.

"Our locally-elected politicians must provide a fair reflection of our society. Unfortunately, at the present time they do not.

"Alliance has two female MLAs out of our seven, many of the other parties are lagging behind us on this issue. For example, the UUP doesn't even have any female MLAs at all."
