Alliance Party Assembly Member Kieran McCarthy has expressed his shock at the number of people caught drink driving during the Christmas period. Police statistics released today showed that number of people caught drink driving over Christmas increased from last year. The figure rose by 57 to a total of 607.

Strangford MLA, Kieran McCarthy said: "These figures make shocking reading. It is appalling that there has been an increase in drink driving during this Christmas period.

"The figures do however show that the Police ran a strong and effective campaign to crack down on this problem.

"This dangerous and shameful behaviour among some people in our society must be eradicated, and I am glad that Police are letting people know that drink drivers have no place to hide. People drink driving will lose their license and possibly their job."
