Ballymena Alliance Party Representative Jayne Dunlop has backed the pitbull amnesty in the town, which was launched today. Pitbull owners have been given the whole of January to hand over these dogs to the authorities without facing prosecution. The initiative is the first of its kind in the UK.

Jayne Dunlop said: "This scheme will help take dangerous dogs off the street and I would strongly encourage pitbull owners to hand these dogs to the authorities.

"Pitbull owners must think about public safety and this amnesty will hopefully encourage them to act.

"Recent attacks emphasise how dangerous these dogs are, especially to young children, and any scheme which will take these animals off the street is to be welcomed."
