Alliance Party Leader, David Ford, has commended the Royal Irish Regiment on being awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross. The RIR was awarded the accolade by the Queen at the final review of the three battalions in Belfast today.

David Ford stated: "I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Royal Irish Regiment on being awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross by the Queen today, in recognition of their service. I also wish to commend them on today's impressive event.

"The changed atmosphere and the findings of the latest IMC report show that the home service battalions can stand down with dignity, having carried out the task that was set for them, and previously the UDR.

"They have provided back up to the police through times of great difficulty and severe violence, and it is due in part to their gallantry and sacrifice that their services are no longer required as this society changes."
