The Alliance party's youth wing has responded to the latest Government proposals on public transport in Northern Ireland by repeating a call for free public transport for students.

Chairman Cllr Ian James Parsley stated: "Competition in public transport would be welcome, but I am not convinced that that is where these proposals are going.

"With free transport for elderly people, very few routes are profitable. We have to remember that public transport is a public service, and we want more people using it. It has the potential to help people move about quickly, assist economic development, and of course improve our environment.

"In this context, really radical proposals are required, not tampering at the edges. One such would be free public transport for students - as exists in countries such as Germany - to encourage young people to make public transport a habit for a lifetime."
