Newtownabbey Alliance Councillor, Tom Campbell, has backed new legislation which will help eradicate illegal taxis in Northern Ireland. The legislation which was launched by David Cairns today will ensure that the public get a better deal and will boost lawful taxi drivers.

Cllr Campbell said: "I strongly support the new legislation on taxis. The legislation gives police the power to stop and seize illegal taxis.

"The new laws will boost legitimate taxi drivers and will deliver a better deal for the public.

"There will be more clarity on the cost of taxi fares and meters will be made compulsory.

"The legislation will also clarify rules on different types of taxis and when they are permitted to pick up customers.

Tom Campbell concluded: "These laws will greatly help the taxi industry and end the illegal activity which damages the good reputation of taxi drivers."
